The Whipping Man
Taproot Theatre
204 N. 85th Street Seattle
As we mark the passage of 150 years since the bloody days of the Civil War, Taproot Theatre Company performs Matthew Lopez's poignant drama, The Whipping Man. The war has finally ended, and a Jewish confederate soldier returns home on Passover, a day to celebrate freedom from bondage. When he arrives, his family is nowhere to be found, and only two household slaves remain. Though a new chapter of history is unfolding, as the three men await the return of the family, dangerous secrets of the past threaten to destroy the bonds of their connected history, and their shared faith. This provocative play, called "haunting, striking and powerful" by The New York Times, examines what it really means to be free.
