The Merchant of Venice at Seattle Center

The Merchant of Venice

Seattle Center
305 Harrison Street Seattle

The Merchant of Venice has been hailed as one of Shakespeare's finest comedies -- which is quite an achievement for a play that grapples with issues of justice, mercy and anti-Semitism, all while one of the protagonists fights not to have a pound of flesh removed from his body. Venetian businessman Antonio borrows from Jewish moneylender Shylock in order to finance his friend Bessanio's attempt to propose to the wealthy heiress Portia, promising him a pound of his flesh if he can't repay the debt. When an unexpected calamity renders Antonio unable to pay up, he and his friends must fight in court to keep Shylock from collecting on his debt. Shakespeare's delightfully dark romantic comedy is coming to the Center Theatre in Seattle.
