Devi
ACT
700 Union St. Seattle
The female is truly divine - and powerful - in this sweeping dance-drama from Moumita Bhattacharya. Devi [/they-vee/] centers on Prafulya, a woman who was married and abandoned at the age of 12, and then kidnapped at age 17. With one life-changing encounter, Prafulya suddenly becomes The Devi (Goddess), a de facto ruler who uses her influence to fight the oppression of British rule. After the success of Chitrangada in 2017, Pratidhwani and ACTLab bring this lyrical performance at Allen Theatre at ACT. The show features eight Indian dance forms and 45 performers and tells one woman's epic rise from poverty into a position of power in 1800s India.
