The Bunner Sisters
Theatre Off Jackson
409 7th Avenue S. Seattle
With their original adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist Edith Wharton's novella The Bunner Sisters, Theatre Off Jackson and Athena Theatre Project bring to the stage a powerful examination of the tenuous ties that bind together two working class sisters in New York. Running a small basement hat shop, Ann Eliza and Evelina Bunner lead simple lives. But when Ann Eliza buys Evelina a clock for her birthday, the sisters find their lives disrupted by its maker, a mysterious German named Herman Ramy who operates out of a neighboring storefront. As Ramy becomes a regular in their little hat shop, the threads that hold their lives together slowly -- but surely -- begin to unravel. Written and set in the 1890s, this long-forgotten tale from one of America's most celebrated writers remains a compelling study of fate and family more than a century later.
