An unsophisticated but ambitious maiden -- engaged to marry Athamas, but secretly in love with Jupiter, king of gods -- journeys to the rarified realm of the gods for "endless pleasure, endless love" with her immortal love. But the jealous Juno, assisted by Iris, sets out to destroy her rival. Presented in English with English subtitles, Seattle Opera's debut presentation of one of Handel's earliest operatic works highlights the opera's universal themes and sense of play. Elegant and expressive, this all-new production stars mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe as Juno, the goddess queen bent on teaching the interloper a lesson.
