Angels in America
The Playhouse at Seattle Center
201 Mercer Street Seattle
See both parts of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer-winning play as part of the 2014 Intiman Theatre Festival. This modern American masterpiece takes a wry look at the AIDS epidemic and the political and social climate of America in the '80s. Millennium Approaches follows the disintegration of two very different but equally troubled young New York couples whose fates become intertwined. Its large and wide-ranging cast of sharply drawn characters includes the notorious, AIDS-stricken lawyer Roy Cohn and the apocalyptic Angel who come together and clash over the personal, the political and the theological. In Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika, the AIDS epidemic is escalating, the ozone layer is weakening and God has abandoned all mankind. Kushner creates a cosmic-scale portrait of legendary characters including ancient rabbis, blind revolutionaries, imaginary travel agents and, of course, angels. The two parts will be performed in repertory along with a series of staged readings, talkbacks, panel discussions, special events and other additional programming that will contextualize and illuminate the many themes and situations of Angels in America.
