  Chitrangada at ACT

Chitrangada

ACT
700 Union St. Seattle

A spectacular Indian ballet inspired by a sweeping Hindu epic, Chitrangada tells the tale of a warrior princess who defies the conventions of love, femininity and attraction. Raised as a man and skilled warrior, Princess Chitrangada is the fierce protector of her father's kingdom. But when she falls for Arjuna, the greatest warrior in the land, she becomes convinced that he would never fall in love with her true self. She then seeks the help of Kamadeva, the Hindu god of love, in order to transform herself into a beautiful and feminine damsel in distress. Written in 1892 by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, this musical spectacular remains as timely as ever as it explores groundbreaking themes of gender identity. Non-profit cultural organization Pratidhwani brings this dazzling tale, which features classical and contemporary Indian dance forms, original music and a cast of 40 dancers, to the Allen Theatre at ACT in Seattle.
